Modern music therapy has its roots during World War II, when U.S. military doctors observed that listening to music not only uplifted the spirits of the sick and wounded but also led to reductions in infection rates and mortality. Initially, musicians and clinicians collaborated to explore the therapeutic applications of music, undertaking clinical research to establish its safety and efficacy. These interdisciplinary efforts delved into the emotional reactions to music and its biological influences on different systems within the human body, ultimately transforming music into a legitimate therapeutic modality.

The formation of the World Association of Music Therapy in 1974 marked a significant milestone in the recognition of music therapy as a formal academic discipline. Conventional music therapy is grounded in psychological treatment methods that leverage the unique physiological and psychological impacts of music. Patients engage in specially designed musical experiences under the guidance of a trained music therapist, aiming to alleviate mental disorders and enhance overall physical and mental well-being.
