Modern music therapy has its roots during World War II, when U.S. military doctors observed that listening to music not only uplifted the spirits of the sick and wounded but also led to reductions in infection rates and mortality. This notable phenomenon garnered worldwide attention. Initially, musicians and clinicians collaborated to explore the therapeutic applications of music, undertaking clinical research to establish its safety and efficacy. Over time, the field expanded with contributions from various experts in psychology, physiology, neurobiology, and acoustics. These interdisciplinary efforts delved into the emotional reactions to music and its biological influences on different systems within the human body, ultimately transforming music into a legitimate therapeutic modality.

Discipline Establishment
The formation of the World Association of Music Therapy in 1974 marked a significant milestone in the recognition of music therapy as a formal academic discipline. Conventional music therapy is grounded in psychological treatment methods that leverage the unique physiological and psychological impacts of music. Patients engage in specially designed musical experiences under the guidance of a trained music therapist, aiming to alleviate mental disorders and enhance overall physical and mental well-being.

While music as an art form provides profound spiritual enjoyment, it is essential to distinguish music therapy from mere music appreciation. The primary goal of music therapy is to regulate one's physical and mental states by addressing symptoms and ultimately improving quality of life. Consequently, the primary demographics for music therapy include individuals facing physical and mental health challenges as well as those exhibiting sub-health symptoms, which refer to a condition where individuals display signs of fatigue or diminished adaptability without a formal disease diagnosis. Some individuals may also seek music therapy proactively to maintain health.

Music therapy emphasizes holistic regulation of both physical and mental health, focusing on symptom improvement and enhancing the body's innate self-healing capabilities rather than targeting pathogens or lesions specifically. As a complementary treatment approach, music therapy finds extensive application in clinical environments for conditions such as functional hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disturbances, mood disorders (including depression and anxiety), and autism spectrum disorders.

Additionally, the growing prevalence of adverse lifestyle choices, occupational stressors, and environmental factors contributing to "sub-health states" has attracted considerable global attention. Symptoms associated with this state may include increased fatigue, reduced responsiveness or adaptability, sleep disturbances, bodily discomforts such as pain or digestive issues, as well as psychological manifestations like hostility, anxiety, and depressive feelings.
