Modern music therapy has its roots during World War II, when U.S. military doctors observed that listening to music not only uplifted the spirits of the sick and wounded but also led to reductions in infection rates and mortality. The formation of the World Association of Music Therapy in 1974 marked a significant milestone in the recognition of music therapy as a formal academic discipline. Conventional music therapy is grounded in psychological treatment methods that leverage the unique physiological and psychological impacts of music. Patients engage in specially designed musical experiences under the guidance of a trained music therapist, aiming to alleviate mental disorders and enhance overall physical and mental well-being.

While music as an art form provides profound spiritual enjoyment, it is essential to distinguish music therapy from mere music appreciation. The primary goal of music therapy is to regulate one's physical and mental states by addressing symptoms and ultimately improving quality of life. As a complementary treatment approach, music therapy finds extensive application in clinical environments for conditions such as functional hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disturbances, mood disorders (including depression and anxiety), and autism spectrum disorders.

Additionally, the growing prevalence of adverse lifestyle choices, occupational stressors, and environmental factors contributing to "sub-health states" has attracted considerable global attention.
